Course Overview

The Theatre School has suspended recruitment to its BA Production Arts (Stage and Screen) and FdA Production Arts (Stage) courses. This means that the last intake onto the Production Arts courses in their current structure will be in September 2023. The degree course structure and teaching for those students already on the course and those starting in September 2023 is unaffected by this change. If you require any further information, please contact us.

The BA Hons Production Arts (Stage and Screen) provides a broad-based training, combining theatre, TV/film and radio drama production skills. You’ll gain a grounding in stage management, lighting and electrics, sound, scenic construction, scenic crafts, and film production.

In the first three terms the course provides a grounding in all the core production disciplines needed to work as a professional.

During this first year students learn theoretical and practical aspects of stage management, lighting, sound, prop-making and scenic construction. Students also learn a range of common skills: communication, problem solving, time management and leadership.

In the second year, BA Hons students then broaden their training by being involved in a range of theatre productions and film/radio drama recordings.

These include one 11-week term based at our Christchurch Studios in Clifton village. Students work on location film shoots and audio recordings.

In their final year, students specialise in their chosen discipline and continue training in either theatre production or in film and TV.

Students will spend up to five weeks on placement with a professional production company or organisation. This is an integral part of the final year enabling students to match their career aspirations to the practical reality of a work environment.

Students are also offered interviews with professionals from the relevant industry.

Our success in graduate employment is excellent.

Graduates go on to have careers in a wide range of jobs including in stage management, lighting, sound, automation and construction working with companies such as the RSC, The Globe, The Royal National Theatre, Cameron Mackintosh, Welsh National Opera, Birmingham Royal ballet etc and numerous other UK regional rep companies and international theatre and production companies.

Students specialising in film and TV find employment on feature films, TV location filming and post production, and a wide range of independent film productions.
